It is estimated that up to as many as 1 in 25 of the general population, that’s about 1.5 billion, will suffer from IBS at some stage in their life, however, each case is individual. There is no such thing as an atypical sufferer. The symptoms vary from mild, to moderate to severe with the majority of cases being medically diagnosed as mild. As with many other conditions stress and anxiety contribute to making the symptoms of IBS worse and in some cases may actually be the underlying cause. At the hypnotherapy room we can’t offer you a cure, but it has been shown during the last twenty years that the use of hypnotherapy can alleviate the many different symptoms by as much as 80%. In some cases this figure is even higher. This non-intrusive, cost-effective form of treatment is recognised by many in the medical profession. A typical course of 'gut specific' therapy consists of an inital consultation followed by five or six therapy sessions of between 45 mins and an hour each spread over a period of about 12 weeks. Many illnesses, not only psychological but also physical, have stress as either a contributory factor or in many cases it may even be the main cause. We all need a certain amount of stress in our lives to function healthily and we can normally cope with this. It becomes a problem when we live and work with levels of stress that are beyond our coping abilities. Stress isn’t all about too much to do in too little time. Boredom, too little to do, the environment, a feeling of not being in control, relationships, change and uncertainty, lack of support from those around us, are some of the other possible causes of raised stress levels. Regular periods of relaxation are essential for our physical and mental well-being but stress often prevents us from achieving a relaxed state. Together with the therapist you will identify the areas where your stress levels are too high. The therapist will then teach you how to manage your stress level more effectively and very important, how to relax. Normally, both fear and anxiety can he helpful. We are all programmed with the fight-or-flight response. It’s there to help protect us from dangerous situations and also gives us the motivation to deal with problems. Panic attacks occur where this fight-or-flight response is triggered inappropriately. If the feelings become too strong or go on for too long, they can stop us from doing the things we want to and can make our lives miserable. We can end up organising our lives in such a way as to avoid anxiety-provoking situations. This in many cases means not living our lives to the full.
Through the use of hypnotherapy the therapist will help you to gain control over the physiological responses you experience at such times. Scared of spiders? Become a shivering wreck at the thought of flying? Then you’re not alone. There are millions of phobics in the world. Because the therapist knows that to the client the fear is all too real it will be taken seriously. A phobia is a persistent, irrational fear of, and desire to avoid a particular object or situation. The number of sessions will vary depending upon for instance how bad the phobia is but would normally be expected to be between 1 and 3 possibly 4. Any situation where there is a time limit such as flying, where you have a flight booked, you should allow sufficient time before flying. Ideally the last session should be not less than 21 days before the event.
All is not lost if you leave it to the last moment to seek help. There is a stop gap technique that we can use but you would need to come back if you wanted a more long-term solution. Pain is the body’s warning system. It protects us from damage, further damage, or warns us that something is wrong with an area of our body. This is why the hypnotherapist will never take all pain or sensation away. To do so would be unethical and could have serious consequences for the client. We all perceive pain differently and this perception in itself can also change at any given moment dependent upon such factors as how we are feeling mentally. If we’re happy or engrossed in some activity then we will feel the pain less.
With our individual perception of pain and the different techniques available to the therapist the number of sessions needed varies from person to person. We can safely say that all of us suffer headaches from time to time but for some they are more frequent and can often be debilitating. Clients’ aims will vary from wanting to stop the headache before it starts, interrupting it or simply coping with it and therefore the techniques used will also vary.
Treatment includes the identification and possible elimination of triggers, pain control and deep relaxation. The number of sessions will vary. Hands up those of you who have never suffered from performance anxiety and we’re are not just talking about acting or singing. Performance covers any situation where you have to ‘perform’ in front of others, be it in a one-to-one situation or in front of thousands. From taking your driving test, to opening night at the Royal Opera House, to sex. They can all cause anxiety. With the help of hypnosis we will teach you techniques for overcoming not only the performance anxiety you have now but also future performance situations that may come up. But don’t forget the day that you feel no anxiety is the day you’ve lost your edge. The number of sessions needed would normally be 1 to 4 and ideally the last one should be not less than 21 days before the event.

Confidence and motivation play a key role in getting the best out of all performances. Our strategy will be to build on these by: gaining control over anxiety, emotions and pain; enhancing sensory awareness and muscle control; controlling inner dialogue; and increasing energy and endurance. We will also alter beliefs and remove unconscious blocks, which may limit your performance. Most of us have areas of our lives or particular situations where our confidence isn’t what it could be. Or perhaps we’re going through a sticky patch and our self-esteem is taking a bit of a knock. “Why can’t I be more assertive?” we’ve all said or thought it. All confidence related issues could benefit from the use of hypnotherapy. In fact ego-strengthening is such an integral part of the hypnotherapy process that you will find it being used during every session no matter the reason for seeking help. The number of sessions needed varies depending upon the depth and/or cause of the problem. |
